A driver interview in Kenya usually has two parts: questions, and a practical driving test. Employers want to know that you are safe, honest and reliable, because you will be trusted with an expensive vehicle, goods or people. Here are the questions that come up most, with answers you can adapt.

## Tell us about your driving experience.

Be specific: how many years, which licence classes, which vehicles and what kind of driving. "I have driven for seven years with classes B and C1. For the last four I drove a 3-tonne delivery truck for a distributor, covering Nairobi and Central, with no accidents." Numbers and vehicles make you believable.

## Have you ever had an accident or a traffic offence?

Answer honestly. Employers often check, and a lie ends the interview. If you had an incident, say what happened, what you learned and how your record has been since. A clean record for the last few years matters most.

## How do you check a vehicle before a trip?

Walk them through it: tyres and tyre pressure, oil, water and brake fluid, lights and indicators, brakes, the spare wheel and tools, and the vehicle documents. Say that you report any fault before you drive, not after.

## What would you do if the vehicle broke down on the road?

Show safety first: move off the road if you can, switch on hazard lights, place warning triangles, keep passengers or goods safe, call your supervisor and follow the company procedure. Never abandon the vehicle or the goods.

## How do you handle a long trip or a long day?

Talk about planning the route, taking rest breaks, not driving tired, and keeping to speed limits even when you are behind schedule. For truck drivers, mention securing the load and keeping delivery notes in order.

## A passenger or customer is rude to you. What do you do?

Stay calm, stay polite, and do not argue while driving. Resolve it when it is safe, and report serious incidents to your supervisor. For PSV and school bus jobs, add how you keep passengers and children safe.

## Why should we hire you?

Bring it together in three points: your experience with their kind of vehicle, your safety record, and your reliability. "I know these roads, I have driven this kind of vehicle for five years without an accident, and I have never missed a shift."

## How do you prepare for the practical test?

- Bring your original licence, PSV badge if needed, ID and good conduct certificate.
- Do the pre-trip check in front of the examiner without being asked.
- Drive the way you would with the boss in the car every day: belts on, mirrors, signals, and no speeding.
