The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) is the professional body for accountants in Kenya, set up under the Accountants Act. Membership tells employers you are qualified and bound by a professional code. A practising certificate goes further: it lets you offer audit and other public practice services. This guide explains both.

> ICPAK's requirements and fees change. Confirm the current rules on icpak.com before you apply.

## Who can become an ICPAK member?

People who have passed the CPA examinations, or an accounting qualification ICPAK recognises, and who meet its other membership requirements. Apply through ICPAK once you qualify. Membership is renewed every year.

## What is the difference between membership and a practising certificate?

Membership is for every qualified accountant, whether you work in a company, an NGO, government or a firm. A practising certificate is for accountants who want to offer services to the public, such as signing audit reports or running their own accounting practice. Most accountants employed in organisations only need membership.

## What are the CPD requirements?

Members must keep up continuing professional development (CPD). ICPAK's rules set a minimum of 40 CPD hours a year, or 120 hours over three years. Structured CPD, such as seminars and courses that give a certificate, makes up most of it. Keep a record and certificates for every hour; you will need them for renewal and for a practising certificate.

## What does it take to get a practising certificate?

ICPAK's requirements have included being a member in good standing for a minimum period, having the required practical experience, being up to date with CPD, and a recommendation from a member in good standing. Check the current list on icpak.com before you apply, because these conditions and the fees are reviewed.

## Why do employers care about ICPAK?

- It proves your qualification is genuine and current.
- Members are bound by a code of ethics and can be disciplined, which builds trust.
- Many finance manager, audit and NGO finance roles list ICPAK membership as a requirement.

## How do you show ICPAK membership on your CV?

Next to your name: "CPA (K), ICPAK member no. 12345". Include it in your profile too. If your membership is being processed, say so with the date you applied.
