Security firms receive piles of CVs for every advert, and they read each one in seconds. The CVs that get called show the basics clearly at the top, then prove you are reliable. This guide shows you how.
What should go at the top of a security guard CV?
Your name, phone number and email, and the town you live in, followed by a line with your essentials: "PSRA registered, Guard Force Number available. Certificate of good conduct: valid. Training: basic security, first aid, fire safety." Firms check these first, so do not make them search.
How do you write a short profile?
Two or three sentences on your experience and strengths. "Security guard with five years' experience in access control and night patrols at a busy private hospital and a gated estate. Disciplined, alert and trusted with keys and visitor records, with no disciplinary issues."
How should you describe your experience?
For each job, give the employer, the site type, your title and the dates, then three or four lines on what you did and achieved:
- The kind of site: estate, hospital, bank, school, mall, factory or office.
- Your duties: access control, patrols, CCTV monitoring, searches, visitor and vehicle records.
- What you were trusted with: keys, cash, the control room, or leading a shift.
- Results: incidents prevented, a clean record, a commendation or a promotion.
Which training should you list?
Basic security training, first aid, fire safety and fire marshal training, CCTV operation, customer care, and any supervisor course. Add the institution and year. Military, police reserve or National Youth Service background is worth including too.
What mistakes get security CVs rejected?
- Leaving out your registration, good conduct certificate or training.
- Listing only "guarding duties" instead of the site, the duties and the record.
- Including your ID number, date of birth, marital status or a photo when the advert does not ask for them.
- A phone number that does not work. Security firms call; make sure you answer.
- Spelling mistakes. Report writing is part of the job, so a careless CV counts against you.
How do you apply for a supervisor post?
Lead with the teams and sites you have managed, the number of guards, how you handled incidents and how you improved the schedule or reporting. Browse security supervisor jobs to match your CV to what firms ask for.
