The Teachers Service Commission runs a teacher internship programme that places qualified, registered teachers in public schools, especially junior schools. For many newly qualified teachers it is the first step into TSC schools, and internship experience has counted in later recruitment rounds.
Internship rounds, numbers and stipends change. Always read the official TSC advert for the round you are applying to on tsc.go.ke.
What is the TSC internship?
It is a fixed-term placement, typically twelve months, in which you teach in a public school under the guidance of experienced teachers. It is not a permanent job: interns receive a monthly stipend rather than a salary, and the placement ends when the internship period is over. Interns who complete the programme receive an internship certificate.
Who can apply for a TSC internship?
Requirements are set in each advert. In recent rounds they have included being a Kenyan citizen, holding at least the teaching qualification the post requires, and being registered with TSC. Some rounds have also asked interns to hold personal accident insurance cover. If you are not yet registered, start with our guide to getting your TSC number.
How do you apply?
Applications are made online through the TSC portal during the window given in the advert. Shortlisted applicants are interviewed by county or sub-county panels, and successful interns are posted to schools, often within the county where they were interviewed. Bring the same documents you would bring to any TSC interview: your ID, TSC certificate, and original academic and professional certificates.
Is the internship worth it?
For most new teachers, yes. You gain real classroom experience in a public school, a certificate from TSC, and a reference from the school. In recent recruitment rounds, service as a TSC intern has also earned points in the scoring of permanent teaching posts. Read our guide to how TSC recruits teachers.
What should you do during your internship?
- Keep copies of your posting letter, any appraisals and your completion certificate.
- Take on responsibilities beyond the timetable, such as clubs, games or class teaching, and record them.
- Ask your head teacher for a written reference before you leave.
- Update your CV with what you taught and achieved. Use the free CV builder.
What happens when the internship ends?
The placement ends on the date in your posting letter, and you are not automatically given a permanent post. Apply in the next TSC recruitment round, when your internship can count in your favour, and keep applying for board of management, private and international school posts at the same time. It is also worth asking your school whether it has a board of management post open. Read our guide to teaching jobs outside TSC for how those posts work.
