Artificial intelligence is no longer a topic for conferences only. Kenyan banks use it to score credit, telcos to spot fraud, agritech firms to advise farmers, and hospitals and NGOs to read data at scale. For job seekers that means two things: new AI and data jobs, and AI skills becoming useful in jobs that are not called "AI" at all.
What is Kenya's national AI strategy?
Kenya launched its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2025–2030 in March 2025, under the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy. It sets out to make Kenya a regional leader in AI research, development and use, with digital infrastructure, data and skills among its priorities. The government put the cost of implementing it at about KES 152 billion by 2030, with half of that for digital infrastructure. For job seekers, the strategy signals public and private investment in data centres, data systems and AI skills over the next few years.
Which AI and data jobs exist in Kenya?
- Data analysts, the largest group: reporting, dashboards and analysis for banks, NGOs, retailers and government.
- Data scientists and machine learning engineers, building models for credit, fraud, pricing and forecasting.
- Data engineers, building the pipelines and warehouses those models depend on.
- AI product and software engineers, building products on top of AI models and APIs.
- Data labelling, annotation and AI training work, often remote, which has been a large source of AI-related work in Kenya.
- Monitoring and evaluation and research roles in NGOs that increasingly use data science methods.

Which skills do AI employers want?
For most data and AI roles: SQL, Python, statistics, data cleaning and visualisation, and the ability to explain results to people who are not technical. For machine learning roles, add model building and evaluation, and putting models into production. For AI product roles, strong software engineering matters more than research. Employers rarely care which online course you took; they care what you built and whether it worked.
How do you move into AI work?
- From a data or analytics role: learn Python and machine learning basics, then apply them to a real problem at work.
- From software development: build a product feature on top of an AI model, with proper testing and monitoring.
- From another field such as health, agriculture, finance or teaching: your domain knowledge is valuable. Learn data skills and look for data roles in your own sector.
- Share your work: a short write-up of a project, with the code, says more than a certificate.
Will AI take Kenyan jobs?
AI changes tasks before it removes jobs. Routine writing, data entry and simple customer queries are the most exposed. The safest position is to be the person in your team who uses AI well: faster reports, better first drafts, quicker analysis, with your own judgement on top. That is true for accountants, teachers and customer service staff as much as for developers.
How do you show AI skills on your CV?
Name the tools and what you achieved with them: "built a churn model in Python that flagged at-risk customers, used by the retention team". Our guide to writing a tech CV shows the layout.
