Data analyst is one of the most advertised tech-related jobs in Kenya, and one of the most accessible. Banks, telcos, retailers, insurers, NGOs, research bodies and government all need people who can turn data into decisions. You do not need to be a programmer to start, but you do need to be precise and able to explain what the numbers mean.
What does a data analyst do?
Collect and clean data, analyse it, build reports and dashboards, and explain the findings to managers. In a bank that might be loan performance; in an NGO, programme results; in a retailer, sales by branch and product. The best analysts start from the business question, not the tool.
Which tools do Kenyan employers ask for?
- Excel, still the most requested: formulas, pivot tables and charts.
- SQL, to pull and join data from databases.
- Power BI or Tableau, for dashboards.
- Python or R, for analysis beyond spreadsheets, increasingly expected.
- Survey and statistics tools, such as Stata, SPSS, KoBoToolbox or ODK, especially in NGOs and research.
How do you build a data portfolio?
Pick two or three public datasets that matter in Kenya, such as county budgets, population and census data, or prices, and answer a real question with each. Show the cleaning, the analysis and a clear chart or dashboard, then write three sentences on what you found. Put it on GitHub or a portfolio site and link it on your CV.
What is the difference between a data analyst, a data scientist and a data engineer?
Analysts explain what happened and why. Data scientists build models to predict what will happen. Data engineers build the systems that move and store data reliably. Many people start as analysts and move into one of the other two. Read our guide to AI jobs in Kenya for where those paths lead.
How do you get your first data job?
- Apply for junior analyst, data officer, monitoring and evaluation assistant and internship roles.
- Use data in the job you already have: a report your team actually uses is the best evidence you can bring.
- Tailor your CV to the tools in the advert. Check it with the free CV checker.
- Prepare for a practical test. Many employers give a dataset and an hour to analyse it.
What do data analyst interviews ask?
Expect SQL questions (joins, grouping, filtering), a spreadsheet exercise, questions on how you would clean messy data, and a request to explain a past analysis to someone non-technical. Practise explaining one project from question to recommendation in two minutes.
