Kenya's fibre, mobile and data centre networks keep banks, telcos, county governments and businesses online. Network engineers design, build and keep those networks running, and the work spans everything from a single office to national infrastructure. This guide explains the path into it.
What does a network engineer do?
Plan, install, configure and monitor networks: routers, switches, firewalls, Wi-Fi, VPNs and links between offices. They troubleshoot outages, keep the network secure, document it and plan for growth. A network administrator usually runs an existing network; an engineer more often designs and changes it.
Who hires network engineers in Kenya?
- Internet service providers and telcos.
- Banks, SACCOs and insurers, which run networks between branches.
- Data centres, cloud providers and managed service companies.
- System integrators that install networks for clients.
- Universities, hospitals, county governments and large NGOs.
Which certifications do employers look for?
Cisco's CCNA is the most requested entry certification in networking, with CCNP for more senior roles. Vendor certifications from Huawei, Juniper, Fortinet or MikroTik are valued where employers use that equipment, so read the adverts in the area you want to work. CompTIA Network+ is a good start if you are coming from IT support. A diploma or degree in IT, computer science or telecommunications is usually expected.
Which skills matter most?
- Routing and switching: VLANs, subnetting, routing protocols.
- Firewalls, VPNs and network security.
- Monitoring tools and reading logs.
- Linux and scripting, for example Python, to automate routine work.
- Clear documentation and calm troubleshooting during outages.
How do you move from IT support into networking?
Volunteer for every network task in your current job, study for the CCNA, practise in a lab or simulator, and keep a record of networks you have configured. Read our guide to IT support jobs for the starting point, and cybersecurity careers if security interests you more.
What do network engineer interviews ask?
Expect subnetting questions, how you would troubleshoot a link that keeps dropping, the difference between switching and routing, how VLANs work, and how you would secure a branch network. Some employers include a practical lab. Talk through your reasoning: interviewers want to see a method.
How do you show network experience on your CV?
Name the size and kind of networks you have worked on, the equipment, and results: "configured VLANs and firewalls for 12 bank branches", "brought average outage time down by adding monitoring and alerts", "planned and installed fibre links between three campuses". Put your certifications, such as CCNA, near the top.
